The MTV Movie And TV Awards are scheduled for 7 May, but in the meantime MTV is making several changes to the categories that’ll feature.

Most notably, MTV are doing away with the Best Actor and Actress awards which previously awarded the best male and female performances separately. The new category will be simply labelled Best Actor In A Movie and will put Emma Watson and Hugh Jackman up among others for the award. With the new inclusion of television shows into the awards, there is also a Best Actor In A Show and Emilia Clarke and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are both up for that one.

A number of new categories are also being introduced; Best American Story, Tearjeaker, Best Host, Best Reality Competition and Next Generation, with reports that more new categories will be announced later.

Several award shows around the world have already implemented similar gender-category changes and with MTV’s latest move hopefully more shows will follow suit.
