Rumours are circling that the forthcoming Apple iPhone 8 will drop Touch ID for facial recognition technology.

Forbes report that the new iPhone 8 will remove Touch ID fingerprint recognition from the iPhone 8 completely and instead install a front-facing 3D laser scanner for facial recognition.

Facial recognition will require a more deliberate unlocking action of holding the iPhone up to your face. Although this may be inconvenient, it will supposedly be more reliable in wet weather conditions in contrast to the Touch ID.

Forbes also state that the upgrade will push the iPhone price to over $1,000 USD for the first time.

Apple’s Touch ID was successful because of it’s easy set up and efficiency. If the new facial recognition technology takes longer or is a pain to operate we suspect there’ll be many people asking for the return of Touch ID.
